Bookmarklets to add simple logic to your search the Danny Sullivan way

July 27th, 2007

I heard Danny Sullivan talk about adding something to the end of the URL when searching Google and signed in and it occured to me that this might be easier done using a Bookmarklet.

Bookmarklets are simple buttons that allow you to quickly automate the task of doing something in Firefox (They work in IE too)

I think its best if I describe using an example from the buttons below. Most if not all of you will have a Google account that you sit signed into all day whilst searching, most of you would also like to see many of the Google searches that you do without worrying that your seeing personalised results.

So you have two options either you sign out, search then log back in OR you add &pws=0 to the end of the url and that turns it off.

A quick and easy way to also do it is to use a simple bookmarklet like the one below, this when clicked simply takes the url you are on and ads &pws=0 to the end for you. Easy as pie.

Hat Tip as ever to JasonD as most of these are his – mine are the easy ones!

Firefox

To install the button on your browser, first make sure that the ‘Bookmarks Toolbar’ toolbar is visible in your browser. Click ‘View’ > ‘Toolbars’ and make sure that the ‘Bookmarks Toolbar’ item is checked as visible.

Then drag each button onto the bookmarks toolbar.

PWS Off

This turns off personalised web search so you get the results that everyone else gets rather than the slightly modified ones for you.

Click and drag this button Without PWS to the ‘Bookmarks Toolbar’ toolbar.

100 Results

This one gives you 100 results for your query instead of the standard 10

Click and drag this button 100 Results to the ‘Bookmarks Toolbar’ toolbar.

No Google Cookie

This temporarily turns off the evil Google cookie!

Click and drag this button No cookie to the ‘Bookmarks Toolbar’ toolbar.

Date range advanced search operator

This allows you to include a date range in the serps

Click and drag this button Date range to the ‘Bookmarks Toolbar’ toolbar.

Geo Targetted Ads

This neatly allows you a glimpse at what ads are being served to other countries (It prompts you for a country code like US)

Click and drag this button Geo Ads to the ‘Bookmarks Toolbar’ toolbar.

Yahoo! site explorer

This does what it says on the button, shows you Yahoo site explorer for the url you are on at the time.

Click and drag this button Yahoo SiteExp to the ‘Bookmarks Toolbar’ toolbar.

Internet Explorer

To install the button, right click on the same button as Firefox above and select the ‘Add to Favorites’ link. You may see a warning dialog — click ‘OK’ .

About SEOidiot

Hi my name is Paul Madden and I am a UK SEO based in Lancashire, for years I have been cursed by the nickname SEOidiot which started life as a form of abuse from someone but you need to decide for yourself how accurate the term is.

Quotes about me

"Don't really know the details about what kind of tongue-in-cheek fate ever hit Paul with the daft "SEOidiot" tag, but make no mistake: here's one of the most experienced and best renowned old hands in SEO the UK can boast today. If you're a business trying to make money on the Internet, there's hardly a better choice you could make than to get him on your side! And he's funny, too - vide his cartoons which I for my part have always enjoyed."
