OsCommerce making all the non www pages be www

Well I have been busy as ever, this time wrestling with OsCommerce for my wifes online business….

By default good old OsCommerce likes to present itself in the non www. way but my change to the urls means i have em all as www. now.

So a simple rewrite later and we are good to go… except the fucking admin section now doesnt work, i hate rewrites…

OK here is the code (pop it in your .htaccess file in the root of the domain.) for anyone who wants to make sure their oscommerce store only shows as www.domain.com pages and not domain.com and so you can still use the admin section…

RewriteEngine On RewriteBase / RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^www\.somedomain\.co\.uk [NC] RewriteRule ^(.*) http://www.somedomain.co.uk/$1 [L,R=301]

Also remember to tell Google via webmaster tools that you want then to only use the www. pages..

Templates and footprints – a CSS issue

When creating sites on a large scale you have to be sure that you dont make life easy for anyone looking to track you down or to ban your entire network. So it is important that you dont leave any footprints.

I have talked with people who change their template on each batch of sites they do – to be honest I never did, I simply changed em once in a while.

What really gets me though is when people use a publically available system and dont even bother to change the default templates it comes with. Some people also make a simple error here too, they see the structure of the site in visual terms rather than in coding terms. They simply look at the css and alter it to give the site a different look. Dont get me wrong you can make sites look completely different using just the css but remember one thing.

THE SPIDER SEES THE CODE NOT THE PAGE

So altering the css and leaving the divs and page structure as is means from the spiders point of view its the same as the default page, stupid move eh?

Even when I am doing wordpress templates I change the layout structure from css to tables so suddenly from a search engines point of view its not a simple wordpress blog its a normal yet unique website.

Think people think!

My advice to someone starting

OK Before i start this ISNT directed at anyone in particular, just a general set of observations for those new to this space.

I have been online since 1996 making money and making sites (More sites than money but I am an idiot as you know:) )

Now I get quite a few people contacting me via email or IM (Feel free to btw) and asking advice about how to start.

I dont have a problem with anyone wanted to get started but if your 17 and you havent any money or skills your not going to get anywhere without listening and learning. Blackhat or SEO or any money making activity online IS A BUSINESS and its as hard work as anything offline (Initially at least). Heres my list of ideas and stages I suggest people go through: -

If you cant afford anything other than an internet connection (heck use the library if you have to) go get a blogger blog or equivalent
If you can afford hosting go get some shared hosting and some domains (Cheap 60 cents Regfly is a start)
Pick a subject – something that is popular but not insane (Dont start with mortgages please!!)
Find somewhere that you can read about the subject
Do some keyword research and aim for the closely related 2 or 3 (or more) word terms
Make sure the page tells the search engine what its about
Write a few hundred words for each page
Create the site
Get a few links from anywhere (People struggle here but the internet is chock FULL if places to get links – yes even real ones!)
Add some adsense and affiliates (Follow the advice about no borders, big rectangle, blue links, remove the advertise here link)
Let the site earn you a dollar or two
Learn PHP and learn scraping
Write your own custom stuff one block at a time to help automate the process
Try not to flood the se with crap – they really have seen all your bright ideas before. Youll have to be clever or even better provide some sort of value to them (OMG i cant believe he said that)
Respect those that help you and learn all you can

DONT ask for free stuff from people – DONT grab hooky copies of peoples hard work for you to use.

By doing the above I can guarantee youll make a little and within a few months, with hard work youll be making enough to keep you interested.

I have decided today that I have to get back to building more volume, since my PC was broken my revenue took a hit (Google and the others decided that whilst I wasnt looking theyd put a few of my sites under the rug). So these are my priorities now in no particular order: -

Get my content aquisition scripts re-done (That may mean what you think it does)
Keep learning PHP (I suck at coding and if I dont keep doing it often it fades in my spongey idiot brain)
Expand my database of topical link partners (In house and slightly more agressive)
Increase the size of my PPC campaigns
Work with more datafeeds

Stop answering every no hoper with advice…(I am very patient and hopefully helpful even when I dont have the time)

So in some cases im gonna have to dive dive dive and maintain radio silence till I get the jobs done
